Laine’s Spring Trend Report

Now that we’ve survived the holidays its time to put the ugly Christmas sweaters back in the closet, and shed the excess pounds from the five helpings of turkey, and the gallon of egg nog we thought was good idea after the three glasses of wine at brunch. Spring is nearing and that means keeping an eye on the runways for what we will be wearing as warmer days approach us. After countless hours stalking stills from the spring 2014 shows and leafing through my three story high stack of magazines, I have pulled what I like and believe will be big for the upcoming season.

1.Wide leg pants: I love this one! (Mostly because I own many pairs and maybe now my friends will stop making fun of me) A nod to the 70’s, these babies can be worn with anything. I personally love the high waisted option (ahem turkey belly) because they can be dressed with with a nice sweater for a more “up town” look or an embroidered tunic tucked in for when we are channeling our “free people” bohemian chic side. Also pairing shoes with them is quite easy because you can’t really see em! Perfect to throw on when we don’t want to make too much effort for the days when coffee and patience is scarce.

2.Crop Tops: I know, a little scary. I’m not talking about some crazy Miley Cyrus crop top, just nice simple silhouettes to be paired with high wasted skirts and pants. (or no pants if by chance you are a Miley fan) I personally like to cover myself a little more… mostly because the p90x hasn’t kicked in yet. As mentioned earlier for a bohemian chic look this would fair nicely with a maxi skirt, some layered necklaces and ankle boots. Or for our Olivia Palermo lovers some trousers and a trench with some delicate ankle strap heels.

3. Sheer: Again, I know, scary. It doesn’t have to be though, as we saw in Alexander Wang’s spring show he featured cleverly placed sheer accents on his sweaters to show a bit of skin but not too much. My personal favorite way to do sheer is to go all sheer and add a graphic print slip or something sparkly underneath. Which just so happens to be my next trend prediction.

4. Graphic prints: The lady who does this best is Diane Von Furstenburg. Her graphic print gowns and rompers had me battling myself for permission to max out my credit card (I didn’t do it…but I wanted to) Although loud, if worn with confidence and the correct shade of lipgloss they will have you turning heads..and for the right reasons. If you want to get a little wild you can pair prints together for some “power clashing” (Thanks for that one Lena Dunham) it takes some skill and definitely some courage but it can be done I promise.

5. Pastels: My last trend prediction is pastels. Like every spring we channel our inner easter egg loving child and throw on sweaters in all hues of pastels so we can frolic accordingly in search of chocolate hidden behind rocks (..and maybe our dignity after the “power clashing”?) This isn’t anything new, spring is pretty much synonymous with baby blue and lilac however this oldie is still a goodie. My most recent purchase was a baby blue motorcycle jacket from Zara and let me tell you it is amazing. My favorite way to wear it is with mixed metallic like gunmetal and gold for an edgier take on this classic look.

Alright folks that’s it for the Spring 2014 trend report…Now go put away your down jacket and go get yourself a crop top!
